29 Years of Laughs (and a War on SPAM!)

Greetings GCFL Family!
It's been a while since our last update, and I wanted to reach out and say a heartfelt thank you. Whether you've been with us for decades or just
joined the fold, your presence and your kind donations over the years are what keep this list alive.
30 Years (Give or Take!)
We recently did some digging and found an archive from April 1997. Huge thanks to John M. Woodruff for digging that up! That puts GCFL at 29 years old
this year. I know I was sending jokes even before then, so if any of you have "ancient" GCFL emails in your archives, please forward them! Also, start
thinking of ideas! We need a big way to celebrate our 30th birthday next year.
The Great Clean-Up
We've been busy under the hood. We recently wiped the server and reinstalled new, larger hard drives, the latest OS and tools. The rest of the
hardware is a bit of a "seasoned veteran" at this point, but it's still trucking along fine, so we're keeping it in service for now.
The War on SPAM
I don't know about you, but we hate SPAM. Over the years, it became a literal sea of junk. We were hitting 2,000-3,000 emails a day with only about 10
legitimate ones in the mix. Our inbox actually hit 1.1 million emails. It essentially paralyzed us.
We've finally taken a stand. Here's the plan:
* The Promise: GCFL has never, and will never, sell or give away your info. Period. Did I mention we hate SPAM?
* The Filter: We've spent months training SpamAssassin to catch the junk. It's a chore, but it's working.
* New Addresses: To stay ahead of the bots, we are using "disposable" addresses:
* Submissions & Support: Send to submit2026@gcfl.net.
* Replies: The "Reply-To:" address on daily jokes will now look like info202604@gcfl.net (infoYYYYMM). These will work for about two months before we
rotate them.
* Forms: Our "Contact Us" and "Email to a Friend" web forms are officially back online!
Meet Valkyrie
We've also built a new assistant named Valkyrie. This helper tool handles routine mailing list tasks (mostly) automatically. If she gets stumped,
she'll forward your message to a human.
Member Submissions
We are now prioritizing jokes sent in by you. If you have something funny, please send it to the submission address above. To help us out, try to keep
it to one joke per email, put the title in the subject line, and keep the body text clean (just the joke!).
A New Look
Finally, we are in the middle of a total website redesign. This will make it much easier for our volunteers to edit and queue up fresh funnies, and it
will feature a better rating system. Stay tuned for more on that soon. If you have any special requests or ideas, we want to hear them!
