During vacations on cruise ships in the Caribbean, my wife and I have talked with many Canadians and noticed that they interject the "A" sound into their speech, such as "Sure is a beautiful day, A?"

During a recent cruise, my wife talked with a Canadian during an elevator ride. After her mentioning the "A" sound, the Canadian said, "It's just natural that we do so. It's because of the name of our country. It's spelled,

C 'A'
N 'A'
D 'A'

Canada!"
